(1944-2013)

American artist George Rodrigue was a Southerner, a landscape artist, and a working-class gent whose series of Blue Dog paintings put him on the art world radar in the 1990s. What started as a painting inspired by Cajun folklore quickly turned into an art phenomenon and Rodrigue painted little other subject matter after the success. While you may recognize the dog, let’s share a little more about the man.

Born and raised in Cajun Country, Louisiana, U.S.A., artist George Rodrigue portrayed on his canvas what he feared was his dying heritage—-including its land, people, traditions, and mythology.  As he often explained, he sought to “graphically interpret the Cajun culture,” preserving it in the face of a progressive world.

Rodrigue’s art studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles spawned one of the greatest success stories in American art.  In the early 1990s his Blue Dog Series, based on the French-Cajun loup-garou legend, catapulted him to worldwide fame, while his dark Renaissance-like landscapes developed into robust modern masterpieces.

About 50 horses of various breeds call Woodway Equestrian Center home, some of which are used in horse therapy sessions, Executive Director Kathy Rogers said.

Woodway sits on about 45 acres of land, featuring two barns, a covered horse arena, three outdoor sand rings, a grass jumping field, wash racks, tack rooms and 24/7 on-site barn staff.

“Horses are a 24/7 job. It’s not something you can just turn off,” Rogers said. “That’s why we have two staff members who live on-site—we aim to provide the best quality care for our animals.”

Husband and wife Armando Monterrosa and Maria Torres bought Woodway in 2015, formerly known as Lane’s End. The facility had been run down, Rogers said, so the new owners revamped the center.

“We are a family here, and we treat everyone who comes in here that way as well. We’ve found that the Tomball community treats us like family right back,” Rogers said.

Woodway offers private and group riding lessons for children and adults of all skill levels and ages, Rogers said, as well as birthday parties, corporate team-building events, horse boarding services and summer camps. Riders at Woodway and staff also compete in riding shows.

However, Woodway serves as more than a horse-riding center, Rogers said. It is also the birthplace and a financial supporter of Healing With Love, a nonprofit organization that specializes in equine-assisted psychotherapy and equine-assisted learning programs.

Rogers said horse therapy can help those dealing with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, grief or loss, bullying and other mental health disorders.

“Horses have this innate ability to sense people’s emotions. They can tell if you’re stressed, anxious [or] bottling up your emotions,” said Rogers, who is also the executive director for Healing With Love. “It puts me in awe every time.”

ABOUT MARIA SOTOLONGO

Maria Sotolongo’s television career started when she was just 19 years old. 

Telemundo’s nationally syndicated music video show “Ritmo Latino” took her to exotic locations and memorable interviews with the likes of Julio Iglesias and Jennifer Lopez. She worked there for eight years before switching to morning television, doing weather and entertainment for Telemundo’s show “Primera Edicion.” 

Her next opportunity took her to Dallas where she first appeared in the market as a meteorologist for Telemundo. She later made a move to Dallas Fox 4 to become the meteorologist and entertainment reporter for the “Good Day” morning show. 

Maria has two communications degrees from the University of Houston and a third in broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University.

In 2007, Maria stepped away from morning television to be a full-time mom. During that time, she produced two documentaries. 

“Breathe,” which is a film about home births, received a Remi Award at Houston’s Worldfest.

Like so many Houstonians, Maria and her family were affected by Hurricane Harvey and the dam releases. The experience inspired her to create the award-winning Harvey documentary, “Changed: When the Dams Opened.”
