Folk Art Flowers -

This original design was painted with acrylics in the traditional decorative art style of Rosemaling.  This is a traditional fold art of rural Norway that flourished in the 1700’s and 1800’s.  Rosemaling can be found on walls, ceilings, and furniture throughout Norway in homes and churches.  Rosemaling was also found on smaller wooden objects such as trunks, ale bowls, stools, chairs and jugs.  Historians believe that the Crusader Cross represents Christ, and the classic shape represents a visualization of the gospel being spread to the four corners of the Earth.  Becky Bordelon has been a teacher and folk artist for more than 30 years.

By the Seashore -

“Growing up in Texas, summers at the beach held endless possibilities of discovering shells, starfish and sand dollars.  Finding a bleached sand dollar was a rare treasure, perfect and white, but broken sand dollars held fragile mysteries.  The Star of Bethlehem and wounds Jesus experienced on the cross gave way to the doves of peace inside.  Beauty, sacrifice and hope all come together the skeleton of a creature that rests in the palm of your hand.”

Texas Hill Country -

I have been working with texture and mixed media lately in my landscapes and out seemed perfect fit for the cross.  Adding plaster finishes and then layers of pain (adding and removing paint throughout the process) provided the texture and depth that I was wanting. The rope was added to bring more punch and interest to the cross while keeping true to the original vision for the piece.

Blessed -

“I have wonderful memories of Santa Teresa de Jésus church in Presidio, Texas where my abuelita worshipped and served for most of her life.  It is unique because its history is directly linked with the establishment of missions built by the Spanish around that area beginning in 1683. I used to think that my abuelita actually lived in that church because it seemed like she was always there.  And when she was not there, she was busy at home making all sorts of special garments like baptismal gowns, First Communion dresses, and wedding dresses for people in her parish.  She was so talented, but also so devoted to her faith. She wanted to honor God first and foremost.  So to honor her, I decided to incorporate a lace pattern on the cross I created a stencil using wedding lace fabric and then applied modeling paste to create texture.  The little glass box contains a colorful drawing of the Sacred Heart.  The primary colors reminded me of the vividly painted statues inside the church.

Hope in Faith -

I am often asked to make donations for auctions, but am rarely asked to do something specific.  When asked to paint a cross for the Strake Jesuit “Viva España, I was elated. Crosses carry strong sentiments. This year, I created this cross in honor of a family with sons at Strake Jesuit.  My husband and I have raised two boys who have grown in to respectable young men full of love and grace.  I understand how hard it is to raise a family during the many trials and tribulations of our world.  It isn’t easy raising boys into men and it most definitely takes the village to get everyone headed in the right direction down the correct road. Prayers are a must during these times and patience is called upon on many, many occasions.  Always remember ,God gives you strength when needed and you can call upon his name at any time whenever needed. The colors on this cross have representational meaning.  Black represents the parental foundations for our children that we provide.  We must remain strong and study for them to grow into adults.  The various greens represent new beginnings, growth, and blessings for our children throughout their beautiful lives. Crosses emit hope and faith.  My sons would end youth group at our church with Numbers 6:24-26.  “The Lord bless and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”  Whenever in doubt about raising your children, call win the name of the Lord. He will give you guidance to help your children find their path.
