Flourish, Small Triptych - Jonathan Clark, Marking A Mark ® Collaborative Piece -

The concept of my work is based on mathematical principles and scientific theories. I use patterns and techniques of problem solving found in the natural world, such as ratios, fractals, tiling, divine proportions and visual correlations between macro and microcosms. The Divine Proportion is the base line equation of my creative process. Found in nature from the furthest stars to our fingertips, the Divine Proportion can be used as a tool for discovery and understanding regenerative and harmonious forms. The proportion expresses the small is to the large as the same ratio as the large is to the whole. Using multiples of familiar materials, such as fence pickets, pencils, q-tips, matches, or offices supplies, I can create objects that have the ability to expand to seemingly endless shapes and sizes. The viewer is able relate to the concept based on their own interpretations, experiences and interests. Often there is more to discover the closer you examine the piece. My intent for using math and science as a template is to provide an opportunity to learn more about our connection to the radiance of things. As a guest artist for Making A Mark 2017 I wanted to give children affected by cancer and blood disorders an opportunity to use medical supplies to create art. Although the medical supplies are very necessary for the child’s health, recovery and survival, they can also be painful, frightening and controlling. I wanted to create an experience with the same materials they are faced with every day, only this time the patients get to decide how they should be used. Neuroscience shows us that the brain categorizes shapes, words, emotions, experiences etc. based on our previous encounters with them. To absorb new information we are constantly referring to previous knowledge and relating it to anything similar. Dual-representation is very useful when trying to create art or discover new ideas and abilities. And in return, the process strengthens the mind, helps memory, and can create a strong sense of achievement. The children affected by cancer and blood disorders face new heart crushing challenges every day. I didn’t want to confuse them with difficult tasks that take away any enjoyment during the process of sculpting for the first time. I devised three different ways to change the materials that allowed the child to interpret them the same way someone would look at a cloud and recall something familiar. I tried to relate the medical supplies to children’s toys and interests. Some of the methods of construction and problem solving weren’t always easy, but I believe it allowed them to have a sense of focus and accomplishment. It has been an honor to be a part of Making A Mark and to work with all of the participants. I already miss all of the kids and the fun we had. This opportunity has helped show me the strength and love it takes to deal with life-altering illnesses. I hope to pursue more opportunities that allow me to participate in our community in such a positive way. Jonathan Clark, 2017 Making A Mark® Featured Guest Artist

Emily Fens, Making A Mark® Collaborative Piece -

For the 2018 Making A Mark® project, I created a vibrant art piece which has in it a little bit of every child who participated. My background is in both art and neurobiology. In my artistic practice, I use saturated colors and organize shapes to explore imagery and concepts from neurobiology. A frequent concept throughout biology is repeated, unique components coming together to form something larger, be it the cells that form our brain of the people that form a community. For Making A Mark, I wanted to take this biological concept in a fun direction that everyone could enjoy. The resulting work is a 4'x4' colorful, interconnected, radiating art piece composed of handprints traced and cut by my wonderful collaborators, the kids! Each piece has the special mark of the child who created it, from the unique shapes and sizes of the hands, to the way they were cut. Without a doubt, the kids were my biggest inspiration for this project. During each of the seven sessions, it was so wonderful to see them light up and simply enjoy making art. Co-creating and forming friendships with the kids was definitely the best part of this summer collaboration. I cannot wait to unveil the final art piece at the Making A Mark exhibition this September. I hope its bright colors, fun shapes and collaborative spirit brings joy to the kids, families and staff at Texas Children's Hospital. Thank you to The Periwinkle Foundation for this very special experience and thank you to all of the kids who were a part of it! Emily Fens

Eagle - Anat Ronen, Making A Mark® Collaborative Piece -

For the 2016 Making A Mark® project at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers I chose to share my method of work as a collaborative project. I paint large scale murals, and use the grid system as means to transfer an image to the wall. The image becomes alive from many smaller squares, being transformed piece by piece into a one bigger, meaningful picture. This 4’x4’ piece is made of 16 1’x1’ squares, on which I sketched the outline of the design. Each square was given to a child, on which they got to choose from a number of mediums to increase the fun level and have them experiment with as many materials as possible. We worked with paper cuts, buttons, pompoms, glitter, fabric, foam and more. The little artists were required to generally keep the pre-sketched outline structure and the color scheme. I feel that the grid system is meaningful in so many ways – First, the aspect of unity and collaboration - many different people contribute to the whole. Second, diversity – we can see that in spite of the fact that the squares are very different from each other, in many ways possible, all of them look beautiful together. Third, I am by nature inquisitive and curious, and wanted to give a little bit of that (and have fun myself!) to the kids – by bringing so many different materials for them to try and play with. The designs that I chose reflect animals in our area. I wanted to do something neutral, something that everybody likes, which is to me, nature. Nature speaks to everybody – young or old, rich or poor, sick or healthy. The children, volunteers and I had a lot of fun. We basically made a royal mess every time I arrived, and by the end of the session I’d put everything together and get to experience the magic of it all making sense as a whole. It taught me a lot, and I hope it gave something back to the kids and the people involved. Thank you for letting me be a part of this project and get to spend time in this place, which really makes you understand what the important things in life are. I hope to be working again for this noble cause. Anat Ronen
