About This Item

Description of Item

If you enjoy birds, art, and poetry, this dynamic duo is for you. From the people behind the daily Virus Vigil emails, we present Hill Country Birds & Waters: Art & Poems, and Isabelle Chapman's signature cigar box.

This book is a collaborative collection of art and poetry that celebrates the beauty of the birds that make their home between Austin and San Antonio. Jim Blackburn’s heartfelt poems are superbly paired with Isabelle Scurry Chapman’s tenderly rendered bird paintings. A paean to the peace of the Hill Country and the grace of its wildlife, this book also warns readers and calls out modern threats to spring-fed waterways and the birds that depend on them.

Also included is artist Isabelle Chapman's signature cigar box, this one with a Pileated Woodpecker, mixed media 9.5"x7.5".

Artist Statement: "I paint birds because they are amazing. They do magical, creative, strange things. The images I make are not realistic, but they are recognizable in a lyrical and idiosyncratic manner. I begin my images with small surfaces such as cigar boxes and book covers because there is a story in them. My process is layering images that inspire me. Drawing, painting, and collaging form more layers. My work is small because small things are precious to me. I care about birds. They are the harbingers of our environment and the first to react to its change."
